Electric cars have quickly become the vehicle of choice for those looking for a more environmentally friendly solution to their transportation needs. They are also a great alternative to the increasing gas prices we are seeing throughout the world as crude oil prices continue to go up without any sign of relief. Although there are benefits to driving electric vehicles, there are disadvantages as well, including the prices of some of the nicer ones, as well as limited range and power.

Although the first electric vehicle was invented in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1839, a horseless carriage designed to operate on non-rechargeable power sells, they have not become a recognized, viable solution until recent times. In 1900, 28% of the cars on the road were electric, but the companies producing such vehicles were overpowered and put out of business by mass production of cars featuring internal combustion gasoline engines. These gasoline engines became the standard for the next hundred years and remained dominant until the rise of growing concerns about pollution, economy, and the price and availability of gasoline in the long term future. With these concerns mounting, as well as further concerns about the world economy, electric vehicles are starting to come back into vogue in a big way. Due to increasing demand for this type of solution, even the big automobile manufacturers are getting on board with their own electric and hybrid models. Other companies are also popping up, with the sole mission of producing the best electric cars possible.

Today, we have a wide range of electric vehicles available, from the small and economical to the functional to the luxurious. We examined several models of electric cars and have chosen 5 top models from those offerings as the 2014 best electric cars. Factoring in 10 different criteria, we have chosen what we believe to be the most innovative and game changing electric cars available on the market today.
